The Bernese Mountain Dog is an easy dog to fall in love with. While they are excellent companions and a great dog for families who are willing to give them the time and attention they deserve, they are not complimentary to every lifestyle.
It is important to remember that theBernese Mountain Dog does not take very kindly to solitary confinement and thrives from regular human interaction. Considering that the Berner likes nothing more than to sit at your feet or in your lap, it is important to recognise whether you can invest in this time. Remember a dog is a long-term commitment.
Do not rush into this very important decision
If you have the time to commit and a lifestyle to suit, a fully fenced yard and at least ten years of love and affection to give your canine companion, then perhaps a Bernese is for you.
A good starting point in adopting a Bernese Mountain Dog is to become as educated as you can about the breed. This web site is just a starting point. the Bernese Mountain Dog Club of Victoria Inc recommend that prospective puppy owners meet a Bernese Mountain Dog in the fur and spend some time with the dog to get a realistic picture of the breed. Web sites, books and breeders are all excellent sources of knowledge. Furthermore, the Bernese Mountain Dog Club of Victoria Inc welcome your participation in any of our Berner fundays where you can meet Bernese Mountain Dogs and their owners. Please phone the club Secretary (details on the Club Contacts page) for information regarding up and coming events.
All of the following breeders welcome your questions and are happy to provide you with advice and assistance. It is a good idea to talk to as many breeders as you can and discuss your expectations in a puppy and their expectations of you as a potential home for one of their puppies - Be prepared to be asked lots of questions as most breeders only want their puppies to go to the very best of homes!
